Top 20: Games

The best twenty videogames I’ve ever played.

20. Star Wars - KOTOR - If only the sequel had a proper ending.

19. Ninja Gaiden - Totally sweet.

18. Final Fantasy VII/VIII/X - I grow tired of turn-based RPG’s, but these certainly kept me interested.
17. Contra - I can beat this game in short order, but I still need to use the code.

16. Saint’s Row - While discredited for lack of originality, I think the gameplay mechanics, extras and visuals make this a better game than Grand Theft Auto.

15. Metroid Prime - A proper revitalization for a great series.

14. Resident Evil 4 - Excellent, aside from the wonky plot.

13. Super Mario Bros. 2 - My favorite Mario title wasn’t really a Mario title.

12. Mike Tyson’s Punch Out - Buster Douglas would have had more difficulty with Mike Tyson’s 8-bit counterpart.

11. Alpha Centauri - Less popular than Civ, this RTS featured different cultures populating a new planet and struggling to gain economic, military and cultural superiority over each other.

10. Heart of Africa - A little-known EA title for the Commodore 64. Players could rob huts at gunpoint for canoes, whips and food rations, only to be consequently chased around the village by angry folk firing poisonous darts in their direction. A pioneer for the non-linear/anarchy genre if you ask me.
9. Mortal Kombat 3 - Universally panned as inferior to its predecessor, the combo system and inclusion of animalities won me over.

8. X-Men Arcade - The most entertaining sidescolling arcade beat-em-up I’ve ever spent a quarter on.

7. Sim City - I never managed to build a megalopolis, but it was fun to try.

6. Gears of War - What a shooter should be.

5. Castlevania - Portrait of Ruin - The latest addition for the DS is the best in a great series.

4. Zelda - The Ocarina of Time - A Complete Game, and the greatest Final Boss encounter I can recall.

3. Elder Scrolls - Oblivion - Medieval freedom.

2. Zelda - The Twilight Princess - This game gets progressively better the further you delve into it. If only the controls were more refined.

1. The Legend of Zelda - I’ve never enjoyed a game more.

I friggin LOVED RE4. I enjoyed all of the RE games so far, but RE4 was just a mind blowing change.

X-Men Arcade is great, don’t forget the Simpsons Arcade game of the TMNT Arcade Game.

You mention Castlevania - Portrait of Ruin. Ever play Castlevania Symphony of the Night (for PSX)? It’s an older game, but bad ass - great music, visuals, a lot of playtime in it.

Durr, I don’t see my comment!

I just recently played Symphony of Night on Xbox Live Arcade. Great stuff! Love the alternate endings to all the recent Castlevania games.
